If you’ve heard about dental CBCT scans but aren’t exactly sure what they are or how your dentist uses them, then keep reading!
What is a CBCT scan?
Put simply, a CBCT scan (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is a fancy kind of X-ray but much more high-definition! Unlike typical X-rays, which provide a 2D, flat image, CBCT scans provide a very detailed 3D view of your teeth, bones, soft tissues and nerve pathways.
How does a CBCT scan work?
During a CBCT scan, the machine rotates around the patients head, taking multiple pictures from all angles. Then, these pictures are combined into one detailed 3D image. The process is quick and painless and usually only takes about one minute to complete!
The Benefits of CBCT Scans:
- CBCT 3D images provide an incredibly detailed picture meaning we can spot issues like tooth decay, fractures or bone loss with much more accuracy.
- Whether you require a dental implant or braces, CBCT scans help your dentist plan your treatment down to the smallest detail!
- CBCT scans can show potential issues that X-rays might miss allowing us to treat them before they become a bigger problem.
- CBCT scans are quicker, less invasive and offer lower radiation levels compared to traditional scans.
CBCT Scanning at Lister House Dental Centre
The Lister House Dental Centre team is experienced with CBCT scanning and always remains up to date with the latest advancements in dental technology – that’s why you can rest assured you’re in safe hands! But if you’re wondering exactly what to expect during your CBCT scan, here’s what will happen:
- We will ask you to remove any metal objects such as jewellery or glasses, as they can interfere with the scan.
- We will help position your head whilst you stand at the machine to ensure that we capture all the right angles during the scan.
- The scanner will rotate around your head taking the pictures as it moves. Again, this is painless and only takes a minute.
- Once the scan is complete, your Lister House dentist will go over the images with you and discuss what they show.
CBCT scans are the crème de la crème of detailed dental imaging, and luckily for our patients, we offer this technology at our dental practice in Essex! If you have any questions or would like to book an appointment, don’t hesitate to reach out.
