With the New Year imminently approaching, we thought it would be great to answer this year’s topmost frequently asked questions by our patient community here in Harlow. So, if you’ve had a burning dental question or have been looking for some advice, keep reading – you might find the answer to your question in this blog!

How to clean your teeth properly at home?

We recommend following a routine of brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time. Flossing first is a great way to ensure no harmful bacteria or debris hides between your teeth. Then, brush your teeth thoroughly (but don’t press too hard!) with a fluoride-containing toothpaste. By following this routine, you’ll be lessening the risk of developing cavities and keeping your smile healthier for much longer!

How do I get rid of stains on my teeth?

Staining is caused by environmental factors, like smoking and drinking wine or coffee, and also appears through the natural process of age. Initially, stains can be removed by our dental hygienist using Air Flow jet polishing. Subsequently, an effective way to quickly deal with stains is to whiten your teeth using high-strength teeth whitening gels professionally prescribed by your dentist.

Why are my teeth sensitive to hot and cold?

Sensitivity occurs when the tooth’s enamel, which usually protects the underlying pulp and dentin, becomes thinner from either exposure to extreme temperatures, acidity, receding gums, grinding or chipped and fractured teeth. Teeth whitening, orthodontic and filling treatment can also create sensitivity of the teeth. We recommend visiting your dentist when sensitivity occurs so they can recommend treatment to relieve the pain.

When do children lose their baby teeth?

On average, children will begin to lose their teeth from the ages of 6-8 years; however, all patients are different, and tooth loss will also be influenced by the lifestyle and dietary habits of the child. We offer a fluoride sealant solution to help keep your child’s baby teeth in perfect condition and free from cavities as their little mouths grow.
