Inside of your tooth is a soft core called the pulp, which can become infected due to decay, a crack in the enamel or injury. When this happens, the infection can spread down to the root of the tooth and even into the jaw, causing pain and swelling.
Root canal, or endodontic, treatment removes this infected tissue but opening the space inside the tooth, cleaning away bacteria and resealing the tooth to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then rebuilt with a natural-looking filling or crown.
