Stoptober is back in full force this October supporting those who smoke to kick the habit. Even by searching the hashtag #Stoptober, you’ll be inundated with hundreds of proud ex-smokers inspiring one another to quit and sharing the benefits they’ve felt through joining this annual campaign.

Here at Lister House Dental Practice, we aim to help all of our Harlow patients who are thinking about or are in the process of quitting smoking, and we are keen to spread the message of positive oral health. As such, we all know that going smoke-free is one of the most important ways you can protect your health but are you aware of the damage smoking can have on your oral health alone?

– Smoking is the biggest risk factor for oral cancer, affecting the soft tissue in the mouth and throat. This type of cancer has become increasingly more common in the UK in the past decade with approximately 6,800 people being diagnosed each year; 2% of all cancers diagnosed. Symptoms of oral cancer can include abnormal swelling, slow-healing mouth ulcers and red or white patches in the mouth.

  • The chances of developing gum disease (periodontitis), a condition that can cause premature tooth loss), is greatly increased by smoking cigarettes. Compared to a non-smoker, those who do smoke are twice as likely to develop gum disease. This is a direct result of smoking harming circulation and reduced blood flow to the gums, as well as weakening the immune system making it much harder to fight off infections in the mouth.
  • Smoking is a common cause of bad breath. What better excuse to give up smoking that to help you enjoy fresher, cleaner breath which is sure to improve your confidence most particularly in social situations.
  • Cigarettes can cause staining and discolouration to your teeth. If you smoke, you more likely to notice that your teeth have a yellower hue rather than a brighter glow. If you’re self-conscious about you the colour of your teeth and have a smoking habit, then the answer is simple!
